Addition to County Weed List
A small tree called, Tree-of-Heaven, will be considered an addition to the Lewis County Noxious Weed List in 2012. Tree-of-Heaven, Ailanthus altissima has been planted in landscapes as a small to medium sized deciduous tree for homeowners. Its placement on the noxious weed list has come about because of its invasive root system and prolific producer of new suckers or shoots. The plant produces toxins that prevent the establishment of other plants and has plant sap that can be a skin irritant to humans. Stink Tree, is another name given to the plant because of the odor given off from the leaves and cut stems. Tree-of-Heaven is native to China and has similarities to a native tree, Smooth Sumac that grows in the canyons and ravines of Eastern Washington. A local homeowner has been battling the tree as new shoots emerge up through cracks in the side walk and near the foundation of the house. Photos and more information about the tree and its management can be found this link.
