Learn how to test your soil at workshop in Morton
Plan to attend a WSU Lewis County Master Recycler Composter workshop to learn how to test your soil. By knowing your soil type and characteristics, you can make it better with compost. The workshop will take place immediately following the Repair & Sustainability Fair at Centralia College East, 701 Airport Way, in Morton at 2:30 p.m. If you have questions about the workshop, please call 360-740-1216 or email jason.adams@lewiscountywa.gov.

Residents can have sensitive documents shredded today
The LeMay Mobile Shredding truck will be at the Community Recycle Event at the old Meskill Drop Box, 3127 State Route 6, Chehalis, across from the River Road in the Doty-Dryad area 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Residents may bring up to 3 bags or boxes or sensitive documents they would like to have shredded. There is no charge for this service. The shredded paper will be hauled to a paper recycling facility for processing.

Lewis County residents with HIV/AIDS can receive case management services in Olympia from Pierce County AIDS Foundation (phone 360-352-2375). Services include help accessing primary medical care and medications, adhering to treatment plans, and accessing support services such as housing, transportation, food, and mental health counseling. Solanum rostratum Buffalobur - An annual plant growing around 1.5-3 feet tall, covered in spines and hairs.Leaves: Alternate leaves 2-6 inches long. Leaves are irregularly cut into 5-7 lobes and are very prickly.Flowers: Flowers bloom from June-September. 3-15 flowers per flower cluster. Flowers are bright yellow, 5 lobed, flat, and circular shaped about an inch across.Habitat: Found in fields, overgrazed pastures, yards, road sides, waste areas, barn yards, it can grow in sandy soil, dry soil, and rich moist soil.Weed Classification: CWhy is it a Noxious Weed?Buffalobur is toxic to livestock, and spreads easily in pastures and fields outcompeting desired …

Phalaris arundinacea Reed Canarygrass - A highly variable perennial plant, with rhizomes. Grows 3-6 feet in height.Leaves: Leaf blades are flat and smooth. The leaf has a wide connecting point to the stem.Flowers: Flowers bloom from June-July. Densely clustered flowers in panicles. 3 florets per spikelet and only one fertile spikelet. Flowers start out green-purple and change to tan/brown overtime.Habitat: Usually grows where ground is at least somewhat saturated during growing season.
