The Lewis County Search and Rescue program is under the guidance and direction of the Lewis County Sheriff and his designees. The program is greatly dependent upon the efforts of many volunteers from the local communities and could not exist without their dedication.In 1959 the Mossyrock Search and Rescue Unit was developed to fill the need for an organized search and rescue unit. They were joined by Salkum in 1977 and Packwood in 1978. The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program is administered by Lewis County Public Health & Social Services (PHSS). WIC services assure healthy pregnancies, healthy birth outcomes, and healthy growth and development for women, infants, and children up to age five. WIC is available at the Public Health Building, 360 NW North Street in downtown Chehalis. WIC staff also make monthly visits to Randle, Mossyrock, and Winlock. English hawthorn noxious weed
English Hawthorn, Crataegus monogyna is one of the most recent additions to the Washington State Noxious Weed List. The small tree or large shrub was added as a Class C weed to the 2016 weed list. English hawthorn grows in full sun and is found in lowland areas of Western Washington. It may be common along fence lines, forest edges and open grass land. The small tree was added to the list because of its invasive character. In San Juan County, hawthorn has infested large areas of agricultural land and open grass lands. Satellite Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event: Residential customers may drop off their unwanted or left-over oil-based paint, cleaners, lawn, garden, pool chemicals, and other household chemicals at Pe Ell Town Hall, 111 Main St., Pe Ell, WA. Please be prepared to leaves your containers at the event. Workers don't have a place to empty them, and return them to customers at satellite events. Limits for these events are 10 CFL lights, 5 gallons motor oil, 5 gallons antifreeze, 15 gallons oil-based paint, 5 gallons cooking oil, and no containers larger than 5 gallons.
