1845-1847 United States Marshall Joe Meek became the first official Law Enforcement Officer in Lewis County. The northern county boundary was reset at the 49th parallel, the present United States/Canadian Border, in 1846. 1847-1848 John R. Jackson became the 1st elected Sheriff of Lewis County, which had a population of 275 in the first census. The Lewis County Segregation/Mapping processes recorded deeds and other conveyance instruments for real property to verify recorded legal descriptions, create, segregate and combine tax parcels. The County Geographic Information System (GIS) database is updated and kept at a current status. The Department updates ownership on all real estate transfers. The method of acquiring title is determined, ownership and legal descriptions are verified, and land area computed when necessary. Sheriff's Office Unveils New Program
Sheriff Steve Mansfield will be starting a new program at the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office that he hopes will slow down a growing crime trend in Lewis County. The program, “Prevent Crime – Lock Your Doors Every Time,” begins next week. Sheriff Mansfield said, “Recently we have had numerous problems with vehicle prowls in our county. My office has developed an innovative program to help address vehicle prowls and thefts. Lewis County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol deputies promote safety on lakes and rivers
Lewis County Sheriff's Marine Patrol vessel. CHEHALIS – In an effort to ensure safe recreation on Lewis County’s lakes and rivers, deputies with the Lewis County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol Unit regularly visit Lake Mayfield, Riffe Lake, Mineral Lake, Lake Scanewa, and the Chehalis and Cowlitz Rivers. The boating enforcement officers conduct voluntary inspections at boat ramps, checking for the required safety equipment on board vessels. The inspection is intended as public education. Sheriff Marine Patrol
The Lewis County Sheriff's Office marine patrol unit and education program was created in the early 1980's in response to the increasing amount of recreational boaters. As recreational boating increased, so did the responsibilities of the marine unit. Today our primary responsibilities are education and enforcement. The Sheriff's Office has two lake vessels, a 20 foot Almar, and a 21 foot N.River. We have two primary inland lakes that we patrol: Lake Mayfield (2,250 sq. acres) and Riffe Lake (11,830 sq. acres). There are several other bodies of water including Mineral Lake, Lake Scanewea, and the Chehalis and Cowlitz Rivers. …
