    1845-1847 United States Marshall Joe Meek became the first official Law Enforcement Officer in Lewis County. The northern county boundary was reset at the 49th parallel, the present United States/Canadian Border, in 1846. 1847-1848 John R. Jackson became the 1st elected Sheriff of Lewis County, which had a population of 275 in the first census.     The Property and Evidence Office is located off-site from the Law and Justice Center. Property items may be picked up Monday through Friday (excluding Holidays) by appointment only.     GIS stands for Geographic Information System, a computer application that permits geographic and location-related data to be electronically stored and spatially referenced. A GIS allows for digital mapping of land features such as roads, rivers, drainage basins, soil types, hydrology, topography, land use and urban and district boundaries.     Radio Service staff maintain and service a network of 22 communications sites throughout the county that provide first responder radio coverage.Additionally, they provide local trouble-shooting services (and limited technical assistance) to outside vendors to assist in identifying and making emergency repairs when equipment fails in the Communications Center.In 2019, they continued maintenance of mobile, portable and fixed base radio equipment for the county and agencies supported by contract.The Radio Services Administrator manages the Homeland Security equipment grants.     Lewis County Emergency Management strongly recommends all citizens have a weather radio as part of their emergency preparedness kit. Weather radios are equipped with a special alarm tone feature that can sound an alert and give you immediate information about a life-threatening situation. During an emergency, the National Weather Service forecasters will interrupt routine weather radio programming and send out the special tone that activates weather radios in the listening area.     Lewis County Maintenance & Operations is comprised of two separate divisions; Fleet Services and Road Maintenance. The Fleet Services Division is responsible for purchasing, liquidating, and mechanically maintaining the entire fleet of rolling stock and off road equipment. Currently, Fleet Services maintains and services vehicles at two separate locations. The Road Maintenance Division is responsible for providing cost effective, safe travel over the 1,053 miles of county roadway in Lewis County.
