CENTRALIA – An electrical switch on your fan doesn’t work, the chain fell off your bicycle, your shirt is missing a button, or your lawn mower runs rough. Don’t throw away any of these items – repair them! That’s the theme for the Lewis County Repair and Sustainability Fair, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 at Washington Hall on the campus of Centralia College.

Lewis County Solid Waste Utility and Lewis County WSU Extension Service Master Recycler Composters have invited volunteer “fixers” to assist you in repairing clothing and a variety of household items. There’ll be a free stuff-swap area plus activities and crafts for kids. Sensitive document shredding will be offered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot across from Washington Hall on Pear Street.

“We hope to teach people how to repair items and give these broken items a longer life by fixing them and keeping them out of the landfill,” Lewis County Solid Waste Utility Recycling Coordinator Melanie Case said. “By repairing items, you save money and learn new skills.”

There will be information booths at the fair showing you how to live a more sustainable life as well as free classes to attend:

  • Toilet Talk: Focusing on basics of household plumbing repairs
  • Upcycled Gardening
  • Bicycle Maintenance
  • Basic home electrical wiring

“I’ll demonstrate a simple electrical system – how to troubleshoot it and more importantly we’ll discuss how to make it safe before we begin,” said Don Marshall, one of the “fixer” volunteers.
