Lewis County juvenile program connects local youth with mentors
Lisa Leon, Lewis County Youth Mentorship Coordinator.
CHEHALIS – Lewis County youth are receiving a profound, potentially life-changing gift from others in the community through the Lewis County Youth Mentorship Program. The Lewis County Juvenile Justice Center in Chehalis is where adult volunteers are being trained to best assist young people in conquering a variety of obstacles in their lives.
The Lewis County Commissioners earmarked $500,000 of American Rescue Plan Act funds to support a countywide youth mentoring program through 2026.
Fourteen volunteer mentors are trained, and have been matched with 20 local youth. In its infancy, the mentorship program has already offered new opportunities and activities to local youth. Four mentors will accompany eight youth to the opening of the Seattle Seahawks training camp Wednesday, July 26. Other activities planned this summer include hiking, kayaking, visits to a museum, zoo, professional baseball game, and a motorsports event.
“Research has shown that youth who have a mentor are less likely to skip school, abuse drugs or alcohol or participate in delinquent behaviors,” Lisa Leon, Lewis County Youth Mentorship Coordinator said. “Having a caring mentor improves mental health, self-esteem, social skills and behaviors.”
Additional mentors are needed to meet a growing number of youth in need of adult guidance. Following a background check, in-person interview and training, mentors are matched with youth to enjoy pro-social group activities from outdoor events to ice cream or coffee. Youth are referred to the program by schools, youth service organizations and family, and are interviewed to determine a successful match to a mentor.
“We have had over 30 applications come in from self-referrals, schools, parents, and mental health professionals,” Leon added. “It takes a community to raise healthy, resilient youth and we need the community’s support to help our youth succeed.”
