CHEHALIS – Construction on new energy efficient upgrades to the Lewis County Jail are being completed below cost estimates and ahead of schedule. The contractor on the job has calculated that the new heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment could save the county upwards to $50,000 annually in energy costs.

“We’re replacing aging equipment with a modern energy efficient system,” said Lewis County Capital Facilities Manager Doug Carey. “The big news is the significant operational cost savings that the county will receive over the 20-25 year life of the new equipment.”

“Our facilities department and county staff have worked diligently to improve these systems and extend the life of our jail facility,” Lewis County Commissioner Scott Brummer said. “The long term cost savings from reduced utilities and maintenance will be a benefit to the taxpayers. These changes will also provide for improved working conditions for our Corrections Officers. This is another great example of efficiency and forward thinking by our staff that keeps our county strong.”

Carey noted that the new HVAC system replaces equipment which has been in use since 2005. The upgrades also ensure that the jail meets requirements spelled out in Washington State energy codes.
