CHEHALIS – A team of Lewis County Public Works Department specialists and a contractor from Centralia are working systemically to replace a 120-foot segment of Little Hanaford Road, east of Centralia.

In January 2022, the roadway exhibited signs of slope instability, including severe cracking pavement. After a geotechnical investigation, it was determined that the most economically efficient method for repair was to excavate the affected area and dig more than 20-feet deep before backfilling the area with stable foundation material, in what’s called infill buttress and shear key construction.

Lewis County Commissioners declared a state of emergency to expedite completion of the project. Lewis County Public Works’ surveyors and engineers designed the repair and the county hired contractor crews to complete this work.

The section of Little Hanaford Road at the slide location is the only way into properties to the east. Travel is limited to one-lane, alternating traffic during construction, which is expected to be complete by the end of summer.
