Lewis County Sheriff's Office Support Volunteers
Support Volunteers are a group of citizen volunteers who give their time and talents to serve the Lewis County Sheriff's Office in many ways. The Support Volunteers provide assistance with clerical duties, evidence room, crime scene, crowd control, inmate work details, sex offender notification, radar speed control, water safety education, and mentoring at scout activities. Crime prevention and community service are a large part of their work load and includes forming Neighborhood Watch groups, conducting security surveys for homes and businesses, and providing public education on child safety, fraud, and identity theft. The Support Volunteers have several trained Crime Prevention Practitioners and some with advanced Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) training. Some of the volunteers have received training in human remains recovery and identification to assist in evidence searches. The Support Volunteers have also been involved in many community support activities including a “Support the Troops” food/clothing drive, various Christmas events for local rest-homes and needy families, and local parades. The Support Volunteers are actively involved in the Meth Watch Program. The goal of this program is to educate businesses and citizens on how to report suspicious activities to combat the methamphetamine problem. The Support Volunteers have also helped other cities and counties develop similar Support Volunteer groups. The Lewis County Sheriff's Office Support Volunteers were selected as the Crime Prevention Unit of the year in 2004 and 2005 by their peers in the Washington State Crime Prevention Association. The Support Volunteers have had a positive impact on our community and are continuing to use their skills to make Lewis County a better place to live. For an application, please click here.
Explorer Post 771
The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office has sponsored a Law Enforcement Explorer Post since 1992. Explorer Post 771 is open to young men and women 14 (having completed the 8th grade) through 21 years of age. Several past explorers have moved on to law enforcement careers with various agencies in Washington State. The program is chartered and ran through Learning for Life, a division of the Boy Scouts of America. The program allows young men and women to be exposed to the different aspects of law enforcement and to become more involved in their communities through volunteer service. If interested, you may contact the program supervisor, Detective McGinty, at jamey.mcginty@lewiscountywa.gov.
Safety City
Safety City is a pedestrian and school bus safety program for young children sponsored by the Department of Social Services. A model city is set up and the children are shown videos on pedestrian and school bus safety. The children are then escorted through the model city by a volunteer who instructs them in the many aspects of pedestrian and school bus safety. Signs, street names, traffic lights, crosswalks, railroad crossings, and identifying fire and police departments are covered. The volunteers who work with the youngsters are police officers from City, County, and State law enforcement agencies within Lewis County. The Lewis County Sheriff's Office Explorer Post and Support Volunteers not only work with the children, but help to set up and dismantle Safety City. The school bus safety part of the program is staffed by bus drivers and transportation supervisors from county schools.
Bicycle Rodeo
The Bicycle Rodeo is a community event sponsored by the Department of Social Services. Several bicycle rodeo events are held throughout the county each year. The Lewis County Sheriff's Office, as well as other law enforcement agencies, take part in conducting these events. The program is an interactive experience for young bicycle riders, who are taught bicycle safety. Traffic flow, signs, courtesy, rules of the road, safety, and helmets are demonstrated to young riders in exercises conducted by officers.
