Animal Shelter
The 5000 sq. ft. Animal Shelter facility was constructed in 1980 and provides indoor/outdoor kennels for dogs and cages for cats, a quarantine area and a surgery room. A stable/corral area (for large animals and livestock) was constructed in 1991.
Animal Shelter Adoption Fees

The Shelter's goal is to attract responsible pet owners and help them provide permanent, loving homes. A person adopting an animal must be 18 years of age or older, or have a parent or guardian present to sign all adoption forms and agreements. All animals are adopted on a first-come, first-serve basis.
- All adopted animals are sterilized (spayed or neutered).
- All pets receive an initial vaccination and de-worming.
- All pets receive a collar, identification tag, leash or pet carrier to promote responsible pet ownership.

The Lewis County Shelter always welcomes persons with at least one hour a month to donate to helping animals in need of new homes. You must be at least 12 years of age to be able to volunteer. Stop by the shelter for a Volunteer sign-up form.
Community Education Programs
The Animal Shelter staff visits schools, retirement and nursing homes, and local business and community groups to promote animal adoptions and responsible pet ownership. The following programs are available:
How To Take Care Of Your Pet
Presentation focuses on responsible cat and dog ownership. Presentation is 40-50 minutes and utilizes a video, worksheets, and puppies to explain the important points of pet care. Age Groups: 4-10 years
Pet Overpopulation and Exponential Growth
The difference between domestic and wild animals is explored and the concept of exponential growth is presented. The history of Humane Societies is also presented and animal cruelty issues are addressed. Presentation is 50 minutes and utilizes a video, visual aids, math problems, and puppies to explain the responsibility that we have toward domestic animals. Age Groups: 12-19 years
What Is New At The Animal Shelter
Current Animal Shelter statistics and programs are presented in a lecture and question/answer format. The presentation can be scaled to fit a 20-50 minute time span. Handouts are provided with animal disposition information. Age Group: Adult

The Shelter also participates in the annual Southwest Washington Fair, the Spring Youth Fair, out-of-shelter adoptions, and other special events throughout the year to promote adoptions.
Community Services
Animal complaints are handled by the Lewis County Sheriff's Office if the owner of the animal is known.
Call (360) 748-9286 Monday through Friday, 8AM-5PM. In an emergency call 9-1-1. Animal abuse, neglect, and/or cruelty are handled by the Lewis County Sheriff's Office.
The Lewis County Animal Shelter is open to the public 10AM-4PM Mon. through Sat. The shelter houses stray, homeless, and unwanted animals. Animals are placed for adoption or humanely destroyed.
The Shelter does offer a disposal service for the owners of deceased, cats and dogs, for a small fee. The shelter will not pick-up deceased animals.

Pet owners should be aware of the "Pet Overpopulation" problems faced by most all areas of the country. It should be noted that there is financial assistance available for those who qualify. The numbers to call are:
